6 Tips to Spruce Up Your Living Room

Living Room

The living room or lounge room is the focal point of a house. It is where all the action takes place in our daily lives – big family announcements, movie nights, evening downtime, etc. The list would probably be endless. The lounge is also the room that is most likely to be exposed to outsiders, as most people entertain their guests in this room.

Therefore, a shabby, half-hearted living room space just won’t cut it. But the good news is that the options are unlimited, from installing a double glazed door as part of a wall to picking a leather chaise lounge! It is imperative to identify and set a tone that will make people feel welcome and comfortable.

  1. Lighting

Lighting sets the tone of a room. It is a good idea to include warm lights at different heights. Or you can also set a statement light that fits the rest of the room. There are some splendid lighting fixtures such as Moroccan lanterns or geometric-shaped wall lights. These lights will not only illuminate but add an artistic factor to the room.

  1. Doors and Windows

Doors and windows always bring latent designing opportunities with them. If placed strategically, they are a great way to imbue the room with natural light. Instead of a wall, placing a double glazed door to one part of the room will ensure ample natural light can get in. Double glazed doors are thermally efficient and sound insulating.

Find out in which direction the room receives maximum light. If you are a morning person and want to capture the early sun rays, this would be the east.

  1. Greenery

Plants look good anywhere and in any room of the house. They transform the space, making it look more natural and comfortable. Apart from their aesthetic value, they are excellent for you and your family’s health!

Include small plants throughout the room or go big with a large centrepiece at the centre table. There are innumerable options to select from, such as Asparagus fern, Chinese money plant, Peace Lily, Aloe Vera, Calathea, etc.

  1. Seating

Getting the seating right is a tricky thing. It has to be functional, i.e. allow maximum sitting, as well as be visually appealing. Of course, one thing to remember is to include movable sitting arrangements such as poufs, stools and small benches. Complement your sofa or chaise lounge with club, lounge and barrel chairs.

  1. Furniture

The chairs, sofas, tables, lights and other electronics constitute the primary furniture of a living room. Maintain a synergy of design while selecting the furniture. The principle behind their placement is similar to a dancer utilising the stage during a performance – space out!

Utilise the space effectively and avoid arranging the pieces of furniture in a cluster. Keep enough breathing space between them. Also, avoid placing them too close to the wall. In most cases, it makes the room look flat.

  1. Walls

The walls may or may not have ears, but they certainly possess the potential to make or break a living room. How you colour or not colour the walls defines the tone of the room. If you have a small living room space, consider going with a light colour or a variation of white to open up the room.

But in case you are a fan of dark colours and have a small space, you can always mix it up with an accent wall. Choose the wall behind the main sitting area and paint it dark, covering the rest of the walls with a light colour. You will be surprised at the results!

You can incorporate these tips no matter which style of design you choose. But the important thing is to enjoy the immersive creative process that comes with defining your living room space.
